So the good news is that Grandma should be headed home next week. They are aiming for November 3rd or so.
The bad news is that the original infection seems to have jumped to her kidneys. She will be on a regime of anti-biotics until Monday and then they will observe her for 2 days without them. Originally they couldn't fight the infection successfully using anti-biotics because of its location. The bladder was harbouring it and allowing it to fester. Because her kidneys are not quite the same in their ability to hide this infection, we are hoping that this means anti-biotices will be successful this time around. If everything seems okay after they have observed her, they will send her home. However, that does not preclude it from returning again.
Grandma is understandably frustrated by this turn of events. We are all hoping for the best and I have assured her that her family is behind her, regardless of what we have to do to fight this thing and win :)
If the anti-biotics are unsuccessful I will let you guys know.

This blog is a place to talk about the bits and pieces of my life and loves. The title came from my Scottish auntie who one day said to me "Oh Sadie forgot her bits and pieces" , which was her lunch ;) I have not forgotten that Bits and Pieces are part of life. So here is the place where I share my bits and pieces and maybe sometimes the things I have learned in a long life.

Not Out Of The Woods
I just got notification from my dad today that Grandma has been put into isolation. It appears that she has developed a kidney infection and must wait for it to pass before her recovery can continue.
I don't know the details and my dad has not indicated the severity of the infection, but as always, I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.

Me again...
So I talked to Grandpa Ray and unfortunately the weekend did not go as planned. Grandma apparently had a flare up of an infection in her urinary tract that was caught by an increase in white blood cells in her urine.
This has caused us to go back to a wait-and-see for a little bit to see if it comes back (her body has been successfully fighting it), though Grandpa sounds hopeful. I know we're all impatient to get her home, but no one more so than him.
I'll let you know if anything changes :)

Grandma's Progress
Hi guys! It's Mary.
I'm wrapping up my visit to the mainland today. It's been a busy one, but I managed to get 2 visits in with Grandma over the past week.
Originally they were hoping she would be heading home on Friday but a spike in her potassium and another minor complication has kept her in hospital this weekend. They are now hoping for tomorrow as a release date.
Dad is in Lithuania but he is trying to get some home assistance arranged for the first few weeks back while Grandma gets back on her feet.
Speaking of on her feet, her leg strength is improving by proverbial leaps and bounds and she is able to walk herself down a long hall to the elevators with the assistance of her walker and Grandpa to keep a careful eye on her ;)
As we were on our last visit Friday we ran into Bob and Buzz. They were getting a visit in before they go away on a trip. Where to I don exactly remember. It must be this baby brain...
In the photo is myself at the top, Grandma and Meaghan. We were sans Charlotte for the day which was nice for Meg :)
In any case, I'll be back out to the mainland in 2 weeks and with any luck should be visiting with Grandma in her home. You will probably hear from her through her blog before you hear from me again!

Quick Update
Hi guys, its Mary.
I had a chance to talk to Grandpa Ray yesterday. He says its been more of the same, slow but progressing. I'll be heading over to the mainland (I live on Vancouver Island) and I'll see Grandma next week and I'll provide a more detailed update and maybe a picture or two if she will let me :)
Happy Thanksgiving all. I know our family especially has things to be thankful for this season. To all of you in the USA, I know it's not your holiday yet, but Happy Thanksgiving anyway :)

Hi everyone. Nan has been improving but not very quickly. She is not yet able to get herself up out of bed, and she is most unstable on her feet. It is important to remember that she was in quite a weakened condition before the surgery, having been I'll for nine months and in and out of the hospital continuously through thT period. In addition, although I don't see it, she is not as young as she was.
So today the doctor decreed that she would stay in the hospital for another two weeks, and she'll be transferred to a general medical ward where physiotherapy will be the primary order of the day. She and Ray are a bit relieved at this as they didn't feel she was ready to go home quite yet. So thats the latest.

Progressing
Hi everyone. Nan's progress from her major surgery has been slow, but steady. She is alert in between pain meds, and we've had her up on her feet several times in the last few days for short walks. She is improving although it is slow. She will certainly be in the hospital until Wednesday or so of next week, maybe longer.

Another day, another report
Hi everyone...this is Adam again. things went as they were expected to go today. Nan passed much of the day in sleep, although she could awake when spoken to. She didn't really seem too aware of what was going on, and she was certainly in discomfort from time to time, but she was clearly improving through the day. Ray and I think that she will be more alert tomorrow, and on the mend. thank you all for your good wishes and I will convey them to her tomorrow.

Long but successful day
Hello everyone, this is Nan's son, Adam. Today was surgery day. We went down to the hospital at 8:30 a.m. as requested, and after taking down her name etc, they placed us (Nan, Ray, and me) in a holding cell and didn't come back until 11:00. Surgery started at noon and was supposed to be done in three hours. She didn't get done until 4:45, and her doctor said her bladder was worse than he thought, and she was on the verge of another major infection episode. But other than being a difficult surgery he said it went well and was completed successfully. In consideration of her age and condition he said she will have a difficult couple of days ahead of her, but should be on the mend. She will be in the recovery room, not allowed visitors, until about 9:00 or 10:00 tonight and then she will be transferred to a ward if she is breathing well and recovering ok. But realistically she will sleep all through the rest of the day and probably will be groggy and sore tomorrow. We will go and see her tomorrow morning.
So...the surgery was successful, she is in the recovery ward, and now begins the healing and recovery process so she can get back on with her life.
